If you are in trouble:
- Remain calm
- Try to float on your back, keep your arms under the water, and
breathe steadily - Wave one hand in the air to attract attention
- Shout for help
- If you have a board or an inflatable, stay with it, it will keep you afloat
- Do not exhaust yourself - if you are being swept out to sea - swim
diagonally to the shore - not against the tide
If you see someone in trouble:
- Find the nearest lifeguard or call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard
- Do not attempt to rescue persons yourself unless you are trained in life-saving or rescue techniques, you could end up needing to be rescued yourself or cause more harm.
