FAMILY CUT OFF BY TIDE AND AIRLIFTED FROM ROCKS
A group of three adults and two children has been airlifted from rocks in stormy conditions after they became cut off by the tide at Ilfracombe.
At 5.50pm Swansea Coastguard was contacted by a member of the public reporting that a group was trapped on rocks by an incoming tide at Ilfracombe and were waving for help.
Ilfracombe Coastguard Rescue Team was sent to the scene and Rescue Helicopter 169 from RAF Chivenor was also diverted to the incident. The rescue helicopter airlifted the family to safety in very strong winds and Coastguards secured the helicopter landing site and met the family on shore.
The family is staying at a nearby caravan park at Combe Martin.
David Jones at Swansea Coastguard said,
If you are heading out to walk on the coast please check local tide times and the weather forecast because it will save you from being cut off. The rescue today was made more challenging by gale force 9 winds this afternoon.
