Fishing Safety 5 Year Strategy

The Fishing Safety 5-year Strategy (The Strategy) is a public document coordinated by the Fishing Safety Branch. The Strategy includes all issues relating to fishing safety to ensure a joined up approach to tackling fishing safety issues and addressing highest risk.

FISG is the overall Strategic Group supported by dedicated sub groups. These are set out in the attached matrix that also includes specific terms of reference.

The Chairmen of the sub groups have the responsibility of ensuring that member’s views and also any views of interested parties are fully considered and fairly reported to FISG. The Chairmen are able to discuss issues that cross into another sub-groups terms of reference and agree which is the most appropriate group. The Chairmen also priorities the tasks the group proposes to ensure those of highest risk receive priority.

The Strategy is a live document. It is able to change in response to external factors such as MAIB recommendations or political wish. For practical reasons it is updated twice a year with progress and new entries from the sub group Chairmen.

In this way the Strategy is an open and flexible way of seeking to improve fishing safety through focusing on specific areas of high risk agreed by FISG, industry, MAIB, interested parties and Other Government Departments.

The Strategy:

  • states our agreed purpose: “working with industry to develop appropriate safety standards for fishing vessels and crew that prevents accidents and environmental damage and to promote a safety culture that reduces risks to fishermen in their work”
  • secures our budget for the forthcoming years
  • signals our commitment to working with the industry
  • is open in what we plan to do and aim to achieve
  • provides the link between divisional and regional plans and the MCA Business Plan
