Survey Data Availability

Civil Hydrographic Programme data is made available via the UK Hydrographic Office and its licensed partners.

Data Available from SeaZone

Bathymetry data, including that from the Civil Hydrography Programme, may be obtained from SeaZone Solutions Ltd in the form of value added digital maps, as processed points or soundings, or in Generic Sensor Format (GSF).

Hydrospatial Products

SeaZone’s digital marine mapping product, Hydrospatial, contains processed bathymetry data presented as depth contours, depth areas and a digital elevation model (DEM).  Version 1 is based on largest scale charted data but this is being replaced where possible by processed point data providing greater accuracy and resolution. Until the release of version 2 of Hydrospatial, SeaZone offers value added bathymetry on a bespoke basis, including combining bathymetry with land height data to create a surface or DEM that transcends the coastal zone.

Digital Survey Bathymetry (DSB)

SeaZone's Digital Survey Bathymetry (DSB) comprises processed point or sounding data collected digitally, or captured from paper survey sheets, often known as ‘fair sheets’. The data has been acquired from a variety of sources including the Naval and Civil Hydrography programmes, port authorities and private sector surveys and has undergone quality checks at the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO). Typically, the detail contained in these datasets is far greater than that shown on a nautical chart. For the creation of surface models, volumetric or rate of change calculations or as input to hydrodynamic and environmental models, this accuracy and level of detail is absolutely critical to the confidence that the user has in the results.

Unrefined Survey Data

The most modern of Civil Hydrography Programme surveys can also be provided by SeaZone in digital, full-density Generic Sensor Format (GSF). In most circumstances, these files will contain the mean intensity backscatter data for specialist interpretation – full resolution backscatter data is only available in the native sensor format which may be obtained from the British Geological Survey.  Note though, other than in a few specific cases, GSF data is far too detailed for general use.  In addition, GSF is a binary format and can only be read by specially designed software.  It is voluminous and even a modest survey contains many gigabytes of data.  Consequently, it is usually delivered on portable hard disk drive.

Geographic Coverage

SeaZone is expanding the coverage of its digital mapping and survey bathymetry products in the UK and overseas, and is investing in data capture to make the most of existing information. For the latest details on geographic coverage, please visit www.SeaZone.com/data-availability.php

Where there are gaps in Hydrospatial or DSB coverage, SeaZone may be able to offer largest scale charted data in the same formats as Hydrospatial or DSB, thereby providing complete coverage for the area required.

Supply Formats

SeaZone Hydrospatial is supplied in formats compatible with GIS, including ESRI Shapefile and Grid formats.

SeaZone Digital Survey Bathymetry (DSB) and infill Digital Charted Bathymetry (DCB) data is supplied in ASCII XYZ format (i.e. as a .xyz file) as standard. A Surfer blanking file (i.e. .bln file) is supplied to mask land areas if required. The dataset includes an appropriately attributed extents file indicating clearly the source of the information. This is provided in Cadcorp BDS, ESRI Shapefile and MapInfo TAB file formats.

Digital, full-density modern survey data is provided as Generic Sensor Format (GSF) v2.02 files.

Costs

Data is subject to Crown and other copyright and purchased under a SeaZone Digital Data Licence. For costs of SeaZone data products, please visit the SeaZone website for more information.

As an example, the table below gives a breakdown of factors and costs for SeaZone Digital Survey Bathymetry (Mar 2008 prices, excluding VAT and p&p).

SeaZone Digital Survey Bathymetry

Licence Fees per Order based on a Single Local User

Licence Administration Fee £100.00
Data Preparation Fee £500.00
Data Usage Fee

Dependent on geographic area, number of SeaZone Survey Blocks, user numbers and licence period.

Each Survey Block contains on average 115,000 soundings each.

Costs based on £35.00 per Survey Block.

Supply of Data for Educational Use

Following an agreement between the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and SeaZone Solutions Ltd, EDINA has developed a subscription service which delivers marine maps and data to Higher and Further Education institutions across Great Britain.

Marine Digimap is part of the Digimap Collection of on-line mapping and data delivery facilities. Users are able to view maps through their web browser, save them for printing and download the marine and coastal data for use in geographical information systems.

To access Marine Digimap students and academics should contact EDINA through their respective University /College Digimap representative. Please visit the EDINA website for further information: www.edina.ac.uk

Please note that currently Digital Survey Bathymetry and GSF data is not available via Marine Digimap.  However, this data can be made available directly from SeaZone for educational or research purposes at marginal or low cost.

These costs may be waived for organisations contributing modern survey data to MCA/UKHO or collaborating under the UK Marine Monitoring and Assessment Strategy (UKMMAS).

Please see the MCA’s ‘How to Share Your Data’ web page for details on hydrographic survey standards etc or contact SeaZone for details on available data.

Data Available Directly From the UKHO

If you are interested in reusing data from products manufactured by the UKHO directly (e.g. you wish to use extracts from a UKHO chart), more details, together with a license application form, can be found on the UKHO's own web-site.

Older analogue surveys, some dating back to the 18th century, may be available from the UKHO archive.  Details and costs for survey data available directly from the UKHO can be obtained by e-mailing research@ukho.gov.uk

Release of Provisional Data

It is the MCA's policy to only allow data to be released by the UKHO and its licensed partners once the data has been formally accepted as having passed through the Agency's full Quality Assurance process.  In exceptional circumstances, this policy may be waived if a tangible benefit to safety of navigation can be demonstrated by early release of data and if a formal Memorandum of Understanding exists between the MCA and the receiving organisation.
