LIFE SKILLS KENT

Business, community groups, emergency services, and statutory authorities in Kent are joining forces to realise the South East's first interactive Lifeskills centre to be located in Aylesham. The message of Lifeskils Kent will be experienced though an integrated sequence of life settings created within a tailor-made builiding. Children, young people, families, people of all ages and capabilities will be participating in the dialogue.

The project's wide agenda encompasses schools citizenship curricula, hazard awareness, personal safety, drug abuse and anti-social behaviour; provides support for vulnerable and marginalised people; engages those with special needs; and helps those coping with an unfamiliar culture.  It will teach the teachers of citizenship, provide training on health and safety, and will develop ways of monitoring the success of Lifeskills work.

Full-size sets being planned include a section of the coastline, the home, street, a shop, countryside, electricity sub-station and a railway feature. The development of imaginative ways of engaging the visitor is at the heart of Lifeskills Kent.

The project development team includes as well as the Maritime and Coastal Agency, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Kent Police, Kent County Council, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, Port of Dover, East Kent Education Business Partnership, Health and Safety Executive, Canterbury and Coastal Primary Care Trust, East Kent Community NHS Trust, Kent Wildlife Trust, South Kent College, Institution of Health and Safety, Kent Safe Schools, Migrate Helpline, Suzy Lamplugh Trust, Dover Single Regeneration Budget, Pfizer, and EDF Energy.  Others are looking to join.

Life skills are the foundation on which all other skills learning is built. They are about fostering tolerance, staying safe, getting and keeping a job, having good relationships with family and friends, and finding constructive and enjoyable ways to spend leisure time. Life skills are ultimately survival skills, and Lifeskills Kent grasps and communicates imaginatively that essential truth. Lifeskills Kent takes life skills out of background and puts them centre stage where they belong. To view further details please click on the hyperlink below.
