MGN 8 M Document Name MGN 8 Amendment - Certificates of Competency - Education and Trainng Schemes Document Description Replacement of section 10.1 to give clarification of the training requirements for Engineer Officer candidates not following an approved Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) training programme; Update Revision 01 Notes To train for a MCA Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) Certificate of Competency (CoC) a candidate must either: follow a MNTB approved training scheme; or apply for a “Letter of Initial Assessment” from the MCA. MGN 34 M+F Document Name LIFEBOAT ENGINES AND OTHER COMPRESSION IGNITION ENGINES USED IN AN EMERGENCY Document Description This Note advises of the importance of selecting fuel and lubricating oils for emergency engines which will not be adversely affected should the ship sail in areas of low ambient temperature. Key Points: Fuel flow may be adversely affected by increased viscosity and the formation of wax crystals at lower ambient temperatures. Fuels with flashpoints down to 43oC (closed cup test) may be permissible but flashpoint is not necessarily a guide to suitability for use at low temperatures. Suitable fuels may not always be readily available in the United Kingdom.
