Angling

Angling is a method of fishing, specifically the practice of catching fish by means of an "angle" (hook). The hook is usually attached by a line to a fishing rod, outfitted with a fishing reel that functions as a mechanism for storing, retrieving and paying out the line. Generally, angling is thought of as a method of sport fishing but some commercial fisheries use methods which are quite similar. Angling is a popular activity in most parts of the world and in the UK around 1.4 million people participate every year, angling from beaches, harbours, piers, and from boats both close to shore and offshore over wrecks where marine life thrives.

Although Angling is generally a safe sport, several fatalities are recorded each year, predominantly from small angling boats capsizing/sinking or from people being swept into the sea whilst angling from shore.

The MCA recommends that anglers wear lifejackets at all times when on or near the water.
