EC Directive on Technical Requirements for Inland Waterways Vessels

Directive 2006/87/EC (as amended) which lays down technical requirements for Inland Waterways vessels came into force in December 2006.  It was due to be implemented by the end of December 2008.

Vessels that operate only on inland waterways within the UK will not be affected by the Directive. However, vessels that operate on the Community waterways of EU Member States in mainland Europe will be subject to the technical requirements laid down in the Directive.  Vessel owners or operators who wish to operate their vessels on those waterways will need to get in touch with the relevant waterway authorities in the country concerned.

Directive 2006/87/EC has been amended by several further Directives, beginning with 2006/137/EC (which mostly concerns EC committee procedures)

The main Directive is a 260 page document. You may wish to consider this before printing it.

The technical requirements set out in the Annexes (particularly Annex II) of the Directive will remain under ongoing review, and be amended to reflect technical progress and other agreed developments regarding vessel standards. On that basis, future amendments to Directive 2006/87/EC will be authorised and issued periodically, probably every two years.
