Every year hundreds of children get into difficulties in or near water. Many are injured, some die. In an effort to make more young people aware of the dangers of being in or near water, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) have collaborated to produce an interactive educational resource for key stage two pupils.

The MAYDAY pack comprises an interactive CD ROM, information and activity cards and teachers' notes with ideas for follow-up projects. The resource has been designed to be as flexible as possible to meet the needs of today's classroom and children can use it by themselves or during whole group activities.

The MAYDAY CD ROM offers a wealth of challenging activities that culminate in children 'taking part' in a round-Britain yacht race. Each section includes on-screen activities and a databank of supporting information presented in text, visuals, audio and video.

As well as addressing the issue of water safety and highlighting important safety messages, the activities in the pack support teaching at key stage two in Geography, Environmental Studies, Maths, Citizenship and literacy and numeracy.
