Access to the Personal Data we may hold about you

The Data Protection Act 1998 gives you the right to be informed what personal information about you is being processed, the purposes for which that information is being processed and the persons or classes of persons to whom that information may be disclosed.

You can ask us about personal information we hold on you by writing to us at the address given below, clearly labelling your request "subject access request". Please supply details of the information you require giving dates, times and any other background information that will enable the MCA to identify the information you seek. Please also enclose a £10 fee and supply proof of identity in one of the forms listed below.

We reserve the right to refuse to supply such information, but if we do so we will write to you telling you why.

Proof of identity

The MCA will accept the following proofs of identity:

  • Photocopy of identity page of passport
  • Photocopy of driving licence (photo cards only)
  • Photocopy of Certificate of Competence (seafarers)
  • Proof that you have the legal right to act on the behalf of another living person if that person is incapable of requesting the information themselves (the MCA retain the right to determine what is acceptable proof in this regard)
