Contract Holder

            Operational Control

Bristows Helicopters Ltd hold the current contract to provide the MCA with SAR Helicopters. At Stornoway a dedicated Sikorski S61N Helicopte is provided, in common with the other Coastguard Helicopter Bases at Sumburgh, Portland and Lee on Solent. In addition Bristows have to provide a standby, winch fitted SAR Helicopter within an agreed time frame when the dedicated Helicopter is not available. The Local District Operations Manager retains overall Operational Control of the aircraft, and is responsible for the day to day liaison with the Chief Pilot. Tactical control is delegated to the SMC as required. Additional, Secondary and out of area tasking is preceded by consultation with the appropriate Duty Area Officer

                                  SAR Helicopter Co-ordination

  • Civil Maritime Operations

The aircraft will be tasked and co-ordinated by HM Coastguard

  • Civil Aeronautical SAR Operations

The aircraft will be tasked and co-ordinated by the Air Rescue Co-ordination Centre at Kinloss. With exception of those incidents resulting in Maritime SAR Operations where it is agreed that HM Coastguard will assume co-ordination.

  • Additional SAR Tasks

In cases of urgency, when life is at stake, the CG SAR Helicopter may be tasked, as the most appropriate SRU, to complete a task which is not of a maritime or aeronautical nature on the understanding that such use does not unacceptably compromise its primary role.

  • Secondary Role Tasking

HM Coastguard may be requested to support an authority which is responsible for the provision of assets for that type of task. Normally the casualty will be required to be flown from one safe haven to another. An example would be the inter hospital transfer of a patient. It is likely that repayment will be required of that authority for whom the task was completed.

  • Call out Authority

The authority to call out the CG SAR Helicopter for a SAR Incident, is delegated to the SMC. To avoid pitfalls of dual control and possible conflict of priorities, the request for an aircraft to respond to an aeronautical incident shall be made to the local MRCC.
